Methylcobalamin is an essential water soluble
vitamin B also known as vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is required for
nuclear-protein and myelin synthesis, cell reproduction, normal growth, and
normal erythropoietin. Vitamin B12 is converted to coenzyme B12, which is
essential for the conversion of methylmalonate to succinate, and the synthesis
of methionine from homocysteine. Vitamin B12 is involved in maintaining
sulfhydryl groups in the reduced form required by enzymes involved in fat and
carbohydrate metabolism, and protein synthesis. Vitamin B12 is involved in
folate synthesis and a deficiency of methylcobalamin results in a functional
folate deficiency. Vitamin B12 is required as part of the remethylation of
homocysteine to methionine. Pregabalin
is used to help relieve certain types of nerve pain or seizures. Pregabalin is
useful for treatment of nerve pain due to diabetic neuropathy and post herpetic
neuralgia and for helping to control seizures in epilepsy. Methylcobalamin is a
form of Vitamin B12, a vitamin that has strong effects on the brain and nervous
system while also being important for cell growth and reproduction.
Adequate
intake of the drug is especially important for pregnant women, as a severe
deficiency can have disastrous consequences on the developing nervous system of
a fetus, yet be difficult to detect. Pregnant women should consume at least 2.6
mcg per day, while most adults can maintain good health with 2.4 mcg per day.
The RDA for pregnant women can usually be satisfied through a well-balanced
diet. Vitamin B12 deficiency can be avoided by most pregnant women through
simply eating a healthy, well-rounded diet. The best sources for
methylcobalamin are animal products, such as kidney, liver, brain, heart, milk,
beef, egg yolk, clams, oysters, salmon and herring. Methylcobalamin is an active endogenous Coenzyme form of Vitamin
B12 that transfers a Methyl group from an inactive form of Folic Acid to
Homocysteine forming Methionine.
